What to Expect at Your First Appointment in Dubrovnik

What to Expect at Your First Appointment in Dubrovnik

For many of our patients, the first appointment in Dubrovnik is also their first time receiving dental care outside their home country. We understand that this can feel unfamiliar, so here is a clear picture of what to expect from the moment you contact us to the moment you leave our clinic.

Before you arrive

We ask patients to send us a brief description of what they are looking to address — or a photograph, if the issue is visible. Within 24 hours, we send back a personalised plan outlining the recommended treatment, number of appointments needed, estimated costs, and how long you should plan to stay. Most cosmetic cases — veneers, crowns, whitening — can be completed in one visit of four to seven days.

At the clinic

Your first appointment begins with a full examination and, where needed, digital X-rays. We take time to discuss your goals, answer your questions, and confirm the treatment plan together before any work begins. Nothing proceeds without your explicit agreement. Our clinic is small, appointments run on time, and you will always see the same dentist throughout your stay.

We conduct all consultations and treatment discussions in English. If you have questions between appointments, WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach us — and we respond the same day.

What the examination involves

The clinical examination at your first appointment is thorough. We assess the condition of your teeth and gums, look for any signs of decay or existing restorations that need attention, and evaluate your bite. If X-rays are needed, we use digital imaging, which reduces radiation exposure and gives us an immediate clear picture to discuss with you.

For cosmetic cases, the examination also involves looking at the colour, shape, and alignment of your teeth in the context of what you have told us you want to achieve. We will tell you honestly what is and is not possible, and what the most effective path to your goal looks like. If there is preparatory work required before the main treatment — for example, a filling that needs replacing or a gum issue that should be resolved first — we will explain this clearly and build it into the plan.

How treatment days are structured

After the first examination and planning appointment, treatment days are structured around the specific work being done. For veneer cases, the second appointment typically involves tooth preparation and placement of temporaries, and the third involves fitting the final restorations. For implants, the timeline is longer and spread across visits if more than one trip is needed.

Appointments are scheduled so that you have time to recover between sessions if needed. You will not be asked to come back the following morning for a demanding procedure if the previous day's work was extensive. We keep the schedule realistic, and we communicate it clearly from the start so you can plan your stay accordingly.

What to bring and how to prepare

There is no elaborate preparation required. Bring any dental records or X-rays you already have — this can save time and avoid duplication. If you are on any medication, bring a list or the packaging. If you have had reactions to anaesthetics or dental materials in the past, let us know before you arrive rather than at the appointment.

Eat normally before appointments unless you have been told otherwise. There is no need to fast. Wear comfortable clothes. Plan for appointments to take two to three hours, though some are shorter. If you are travelling directly from another city on the day of your first appointment, try to allow some time to settle before attending — being rushed adds unnecessary stress.

Pain management and comfort during treatment

We use local anaesthesia for all procedures that require it, and we take care to ensure you are fully comfortable before proceeding. If at any point during treatment you feel discomfort, you can stop us. This is not something patients need to feel awkward about — it is a normal part of clinical communication.

For patients who feel anxious about dental treatment, we are experienced in working at a calm, unhurried pace. Our clinic is quiet, our team is small, and appointments are not back-to-back in a way that creates pressure. Most patients who arrive expecting to find dental care difficult tell us afterwards that the experience was more manageable than they had anticipated.

Post-procedure discomfort, where it occurs, is typically mild and short-lived. We will tell you what to expect after each appointment and what to take if needed.

What happens after you return home

Before you leave Dubrovnik, we will give you a clear summary of the work completed and any aftercare instructions relevant to your treatment. For veneer and crown cases, this includes guidance on what to avoid in the first few days and how to care for the restorations long-term.

We also prepare a brief clinical summary that you can share with a dentist at home if needed. This is useful if you have a regular dentist who will be seeing you for check-ups going forward.

How follow-up works remotely

We remain available after you return home. If something does not feel right, or if you have a question about your treatment, WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach us. We will assess the situation and advise you on whether you need to see a local dentist, whether the issue is likely to resolve on its own, or whether it is worth returning to us.

In cases where restorations need adjustment — which is uncommon but does occur — we will discuss the best way to handle it, whether remotely or in person. Our goal is that patients leave Dubrovnik with a result they are satisfied with, and that they know we are reachable if anything changes.
